In a Westown Aerial Flyover video captured at the end of November 2022, the development of Westown site can clearly be seen.
The construction of the bypass along Kassier Rd is very visible as is the work being done to construct the platforms for Westown Square.
A critical part of the Westown development is the R733 million infrastructure investment which includes the long overdue upgrade of Kassier Rd. The commitment by the eThekweni Municipality to the funding of this work has enabled Westown to begin development. This infrastructure upgrade includes:
- Bulk infrastructure (water, wastewater, electricity,)
- Two new bridges
- A total makeover of the existing two-lane Kassier Rd across the M13 and N3 into four lanes with a centre median
- A new pedestrian bridge over the N3
- A new loop ramp and bridge over Kassier Road providing direct access into Westown.
PHASED UPGRADE
Because of the extent of the Westown development and the number of sub-precincts to come on stream over time, the Kassier Rd upgrade will be phased over the coming years.
- Kassier Rd Upgrade Phase 1A: From the N3 heading south towards the Milky Way (MR559) intersection. Construction began in October 2022 on a bypass road that will be in place from end January 2023 for 12 to 15 months.
- Kassier Rd Upgrade Phase 1B: From the N3 Kassier Rd / Shongweni interchange heading north to the Hillcrest hospital and Alverstone intersection. Construction will begin in early 2023.
- Kassier Rd Phase 2: From Alverstone to the R103 (Old Main Rd). Construction timing for this work will be confirmed.
As the road upgrades progress, so too will the development of The West Private Hospital, Westown Lifestyle, the Westown warehousing and logistics hub and the first residential units. Click on the video link below to view this 1min 30sec video on the Westown YouTube Channel.
