The different views of Dynamic Compaction, a construction technique being used in preparation for the Westown Square retail experience.
This technique involves the use of a “drop weight” or “hammer,” lifted to a set height and dropped onto the ground surface in a grid pattern laid across the site. In the case of Westown Square, a 13-ton weight is hoisted into the air and dropped over a distance of 20 meters.
When the weight hits the ground, it generates a high-intensity impact force. This causes the soil particles to rearrange and settle more tightly, thereby increasing the soil density and compaction. By compacting the soil, the potential for long-term settlement is reduced, which is important for ensuring the stability and quality of the constructed structures.
