Westown is using dynamic compaction, a construction technique that will compact the soil on site in preparation for the bulk earthworks for Westown Square.
Not a common practice in KwaZulu-Natal, given the profile of the soil, Westown has opted to use this process in order to mitigate against the long-term settlement of the fill.
During this compaction process, a 13-ton weight is hoisted into the air and dropped over 20m in a pre-determined grid pattern that will cover the extent of the site. This technique densifies soils and fill materials and is capable of compacting a wide variety of weak soils. This increases the bearing capacity of the soil and importantly reduces the long-term settlement for better quality assurance.
