UPDATE – Kassier Rd / M13 Bridge Upgrade

UPDATE – Kassier Rd / M13 Bridge Upgrade – Despite the ongoing rain, significant progress has been made on the Kassier Road upgrade.

By the time Westown Square opens on 27 March, the NEW road will be fully open with 4 lanes of traffic from the Cliffdale/Engen intersection to Westown, along with completed access roads in and out of the precinct.

Upgrade work on the section of Kassier Rd between the M13 bridge and Cliffdale Rd is next, starting with the construction of new lanes on the Durban Shongweni club side of Kassier Rd. This will begin on MONDAY 17th MARCH (from the previously communicated date of 9^th March), when it is also expected that the NEW lanes on the Aintree side of Kassier Rd will be complete.

This work ties into the M13 bridge upgrade as per the program below and ILLUSTRATED IN THIS PDF

PHASE 1 – Underway

• Upgrade work on the NEW M13 bridge

PHASE 2 – From 17^th March 2025

• Construction of the NEW lanes on the Aintree side of Kassier Rd complete.
• Work to begin on the NEW lanes on the Durban Shongweni club side of Kassier Rd.
• Temporary closure of the onramp to the M13 (PMB bound) – Commuters to use the N3 to PMB
• Temporary closure of the RIGHT TURN LANE to Hillcrest at the M13 off ramp from Durban – Hillcrest bound traffic to use the temporary turning circle at the Cliffdale intersection.
• The left turn lane at the M13 off ramp from Durban remains OPEN
• The onramp onto the M13 to Durban remains OPEN
• The offramp from the M13 from PMB remains OPEN
• Kassier Rd remains OPEN

PHASE 3 – From 27^th March 2025

• The NEW Kassier Rd opens from the Cliffdale/Engen intersection to Westown with 2 lanes in both directions.
• The temporary closure of the onramp to the M13 (PMB bound) remains
• The temporary closure of the RIGHT TURN LANE to Hillcrest at the M13 off ramp from Durban remains.
• The left turn lane at the M13 off ramp from Durban remains OPEN
• The onramp onto the M13 to Durban remains OPEN
• The offramp from the M13 from PMB remains OPEN

PHASE 4 – From early April 2025

• The NEW bridge over the M13 will open
• Work begins on the OLD M13 bridge
• There will be 2 lanes of traffic from the Cliffdale/Engen intersection across the M13
• There will be 1 lane of traffic across the M13 flowing into the NEW 2-lane Kassier Rd all the way to Westown.
• The temporary closure of the onramp to the M13 (PMB bound) remains
• The temporary closure of the RIGHT TURN LANE to Hillcrest at the M13 off ramp from Durban remains.
• The left turn lane at the M13 off ramp from Durban remains OPEN
• The onramp onto the M13 to Durban remains OPEN
• The offramp from the M13 from PMB remains OPEN

PHASE 4 – From July 2025

• M13 bridge upgrade complete
• The section of Kassier Rd from the Cliffdale/Engen intersection to across the M13 bridge is complete with 2 lanes in both directions
• Signalised intersections at Cliffdale/Engen intersection, M13 on-ramp and M13 off-ramp complete.

Planning of the next phase of the Kassier Road upgrade includes the section from M13 to the R103. Details of this program will be shared when it is available.
